"Boosh!"
Also spoilers ahead.
A near-schizophrenic show about an alien trying to destroy the world with his ‘Annihilatrix’. If you’re surprised by the fact that the ‘world destroying’ is only focused on in probably only six episodes, then you haven’t watched an Adult Swim show.
The first season focuses on protagonist Killface… or protagonist billionaire-playboy Xander Crews. The first few episodes completely set up our two main characters. Killface is searching for some name recognition, which perfectly lines up with Xander Crews trying to merchandise his superhero persona ‘Awesome X’, who needs a villain.
After the two meet, the show quickly devolves into a crazy, nonsensical binge worthy spectacular. Emphasis on ‘binge worthy’ because the whole first season feels like a movie with how tightly written each episode is. Every episode is like a single scene. You really just can’t put it down.
Sadly, I can't say I like most of the second season.
Honestly I think the biggest flaw with the second season is that its too focused. Sure the first season had an overarching narrative, but it still had episode after episode of unpredictable joyous nonsense. One episode Killface is trying to get money to pay for insurance, the next he's become a blind man because ant-acid got spit in his eyes.
The second season is about Killface running for President, after the Annihilatrix accidentally pushes the Earth away from the sun by three feet, curing global warming. The storyline is pretty by the numbers for the setting—Create a political platform, get a campaign vehicle, win over voters, have a debate. They also status quo back Xander so he can run against Killface.
I do think I’m biased for the first season for the most part, mostly because its best moments focuses on Killface and Xander together. I have a weak spot for idiot egotistical main characters.
But, I can’t lie and say it doesn’t get really good near the end. Killface and Xander can’t actually constitutionally become president, since you have to be 35 years old and a US citizen… So, the Annihilatrix is back on the plot menu. Syd, Killface’s ‘indentured servant’ who previously went rogue, took over the Annihilatrix. And now, we’re finally back to the good old season one plot structure. Crazy weird shit each episode.
In any case, the show’s great. Should've gotten a third season, especially since it left on a cliffhanger.
